The film starts three years earlier. A woman named Claire (Hannah Galway) stops at a motel and is greeted by Shelly/Pin-Up Girl (Ema Horvath). After sending her to her room, Claire is later disturbed by the “Is Tamara here?” knocking routine before The Strangers abduct her. When she asks Pin-Up Girl why they’re doing this, she responds “Because you were here.” They then stab Claire to death. Pin-Up Girl and Scarecrow then “kiss” through their masks.
Jump back to the aftermath of the ambulance crash, where Maya (Madelaine Petsch) is hiding from Scarecrow and Dollface. They bring Shelly’s body into their truck before driving off. Maya walks to a church, where she is met by Gregory (Gabriel Basso). He drinks to Shelly’s memory and gives Maya a shot for Ryan’s memory. Gregory claims that The Strangers killed his friends as well, before pointing out Maya killed Shelly. She says she didn’t mean to do it, but Gregory thinks she did.
Maya is found by Sheriff Rotter (Richard Brake), who is preparing to escort her, but she is rightfully suspicious of him and steals his van when he exits. She is momentarily distracted on the road and crashes into a tree. Maya stumbles out and is captured by Scarecrow and Dollface, then thrown into the back of their truck next to Shelly’s body.
A flashback shows that Rotter is Gregory’s father, and he testified when Gregory was on trial for the murder of Tamara. Rotter was able to maintain custody of Gregory and keep him out of prison. He tried to cover for Gregory and Shelly in their killings, but was unable to prevent them from going after regular folks visiting Venus. Gregory and Shelly axe-murder a man and leave his body in the woods, where Rotter has to manage their problem.
Maya’s sister Debbie (Rachel Shenton) and her husband Howard (George Young), plus their friend Marcus (Miles Yekkini), arrive at the diner in Venus to ask around about Maya’s disappearance since they know Ryan was murdered too. One waitress says that what happened with Maya was “unfortunate” and tells Debbie that this is not the first time visitors in Venus have gone missing.
Scarecrow and Dollface put Shelly’s body through a wood chipper. Dollface then tattoos a smiley face on Maya’s skin like the one Shelly had.
Another flashback to 12 years earlier shows teenage Shelly and Gregory (Finn Cofell and Kyle Brietkopf) at a gas station looking for potential victims. Shelly goes inside the shop and is bothered by a sleazy guy. The guy’s girlfriend, Jasmine, (Stephanie Aubertin) is upset because he promised he wouldn’t hit on other girls again. Shelly and Gregory pick them as their targets and follow them to their motel room. Shelly does the “Is Tamara here?” thing before Gregory breaks the door in and are stunned to find that Jasmine murdered her boyfriend already. Jasmine would join Shelly and Gregory to become Dollface.
Rotter is with his deputy, Tommy Walters (Pedro Leandro), as they are in the coroner’s office looking over the corpses of the latest Strangers victims. When Tommy starts to suspect that Rotter is involved, the sheriff responds by sticking a drill in Tommy’s head.
Scarecrow forces Maya to wear Pin-Up Girl’s mask and forcefully kisses her. He and Dollface then take Maya with them to stalk another motel couple, Mike and Carrie (Joel Labelle and Dani Klupsch). Scarecrow orders Maya to kill one of them, but she refuses. He takes his axe and starts to hack Mike to death. While Dollface watches, Maya grabs the machete she is holding and impales her with it, before smashing her head on the floor repeatedly. Scarecrow then takes Maya’s hands and forces her to impale Carrie through the stomach, then asks Maya if it felt good.
Debbie, Howard, and Marcus follow Rotter when they think he might lead them to Maya. Marcus is ambushed in a building by Rotter and shot to death. Scarecrow attacks Debbie and Howard in a trailer, ramming it with the truck and then hacking Howard to death with his axe. He then pulls Debbie out of the trailer and stabs her to death in front of Maya, who can only react with quiet shock. Scarecrow and Rotter take Dollface’s body and leave Maya alone with Debbie’s body and the truck. Maya starts to drive out of Venus but has a change of heart and decides to end the Rotters’ reign of terror.
Maya finds Rotter’s hideout. She grabs a shotgun and blasts Rotter to death. She is then found by Scarecrow in a room with a shrine dedicated to Shelly, who removes his mask and confirms he is Gregory. Maya tricks Gregory into thinking that she will join him out of love, only for her to stab him when he least expects it, and she then slams the axe down onto his chest.
The film concludes as Maya walks through the woods, clutching Scarecrow’s mask.[wide]
